Playoff Game 1 Recap: Ducks 10, Gray Bats 1

Unofficial line:

Nick Homa CG, 5 hits 8 K’s 1ER
Kirk Gibson: 2-3, BB, 1B, HR, 3RBI,
Castle 2-3, SB, 3runs
Depo 1-3, 2B, 2RBI – three ladies after the game.

The Ducks (1-0) advance to the Wales Conference semifinals thanks to a 10-1 win over the Gray Bats (0-1), setting up a rematch with Kenny Powers and the rival Black Sox.

Nick Homa doesn’t lose to Ben Sorosky.

The game was scoreless going into the top of the 3rd when Sorosky singled home some dude who hates his coach.

The Gray Bats led 1-0. They had runners on first and second with nobody out.
Ducks’ reliever Adam Smith was warming up in the pen, the Bats had their best hitter at the plate, and he infield-flied out.
Homa K’d the next guy, then a ground-out ended the threat.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Ducks scored five runs with two outs.

Gwin singled and stole second, then
Captain doubled to center.
1-1

with the score tied Kirk stepped to the plate…
Gibson drove in what would be the game winning run

2-1 Ducks

Gibson advanced on a passed ball.
J.Smith walked.
Wojton singled in Kirk.

3-1 Ducks

Depo hit a bases clearing double to right-center and the Ducks led 5-1 after 3.

The Gray Bats hit out of order, but weren’t called out. I think it was a typo in the lineup card, but this is the playoffs.

Casale led off the 4th with a walk.
Gwin bunted down the thirdbase line, beat the throw to first, which got away from J.Rocker, and Casale scored.

Gwin marked it as an RBI double in the book.

Ducks 6, Gray Bats 1 after 5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sorosky was relieved trailing 6-1.
Casale walked to start the inning, then a perfectly executed hit and run by Gwin and Casale turned into another RBI double to right for Gwin.

7-1 Ducks

Novak tripled to right to make the score 8-1.

Kirk Gibson’s Homerun

McCray is now tied with Gwin and Wojton for the Ducks all-time post season HR record. (1)
He hit one off the dirt mound well past the wall in right field.

The Commish and Strom retrieved the ball
they can attest – it was a shot.

10-1 Ducks.

Homa retired the side in order in the top of the 7th.

i think i missed an inning in the recap.

After all that talk about sportsmanship, the Gray Bats’ coach didn’t shake hands after the game.

This was the Ducks’ day, Homa was better than Lombaradi this afternoon, and the Ducks hit when we had to.
We didn’t stop after one inning of offense.
Both teams played hard and with class.

it could have been a different game if that guy makes the diving catch on Captain and if maybe the Bats more guys contributing on offense, but when the dust settled, and South Oakland won by nine [9] runs.

The gin bucket will flow again.

The South Oakland Ducks of the North Side are now 6-4 all time in post season play.

This is the game we’ve been waiting for since we were eliminated last season.

We knew it was coming all year.

Another shot at Kenny Powers and the Sox for the right to advance to the Conference Finals.
I bet the Sox would have rather played the Rebels or whatever, but they knew they’d get us again, and deep down i know Kenny, and Goldie, BSOX 40, and Chalfin are pumped its us.

The Rebels play the Owlz in the Forgone Conclusion Game tomorrow.
The Bombers crushed the Oilers 10-1, and take on the Fightin’s’ tomorrow.
The Bulldogs play the Warriors in the other Campbell Conference semi.

Quack.

For the record… Graff and Strom retrieved the ball so they could throw it back on the field and boo McCray — whose bat flip nearly cost the only man Chuck Norris fears his head…

Well played game on both ends. Ducks got the timely hits when they needed them. Sorosky played a hell of game in defeat.

it was a shot though, gibson did regret the showboating.

sorosky had a great game on offense and on the mound

first of all, who is the only man Chuck Norris fears and what does his head have to do with a bat flip?

secondly, the "flip" was something i realized i shouldn't have done before i even reached first base, but so what? yeah, it's busch to flip you're bat when you're up by seven, but its also ridiculously busch to gloat about the abilities of your team when you're 3-21, as it is also busch for the commissioner of a league to walk a great length to retrieve a ball so that he can "throw it back" in protest of said flip. it also seems busch to me to have rules that allow for teams to bat out of order with no consequences.

lastly, it seems like the commish doesn't enjoy the way i play the game, and thats fine. he has spoken out about much of my "antics" this year. differences aside, i do appreciate all that he does for the league to ensure its smooth running, its sustainability, and, ultimately, its growth. his position is one that i surely do not envy, and he does a good job of it.

Again, for the record… I love Kirk Gibson. I enjoy busting his balls. He plays with passion, and I respect that. Things happen in the course of a game, I know that. However, I've always known him to be a good sport so I figured he could handle a little good natured ribbin' after he hammered a ball a solid 360 feet or more.

ok, thats what i was hoping joe.

i was just hoping it didn't offend you too much. if you were just ball busting — keep it up.

And Jesse Smith. Chuck Norris fears Jesse Smith. He bats after you. Strom and I thought they may head hunt after your flip… but they didn't.

As for the batting out of order… I don't know if the commissioner's post got lost on that or what…

Basically, both teams were wrong on that. Based on the rules, I interpreted what I thought was in the best interest and spirit of the game. Was I right? I don't know. Looked it up when I got home… I'm open to suggestions.

I basically saw it as one of two things: 1) Bats order was legally Brandt, Weitzman, Weitzman (which is illegal) or 2) Bats order was legally sunseri, brandt, weitzman based on the first time through the order. I ruled in favor of #2…

Additionally, I'm pretty sure even if I ruled for #1, then the bats would have made three illegal substitutions the first time through their order… like I said it numbed my mind. Both teams were at fault in my opinion… I'm open to others.

we noticed the illegal substitution as soon as it happened but waited till an opportune moment to call it. we would have ended the inning there. i think they just wrote one guys name twice and so when he didn't go up to bat two consecutive times, something was up.

it really doesn't matter, I'm just glad TC is on point with our lineup all the time.

larry listed 8 guys on the ducks card, from what I was told. skipped sunseri altogether (who was on their card in their dugout – not that it mattered). The first time sunseri batted….

Sunseri singled… time should have been called. Sunseri would have been "out" for batting in Brandt's spot. Brandt would have been skipped and Weitzman would have been at bat. End of issue. Sunseri then could have been added in the nine spot legally, and batted again… a batter after he had just batted 😉

Then again, once brandt was pitched to, and weitzman followed, it could be said that sunseri snuck in an at-bat illegally the first time around… or that brandt batted illegally for weitzman, or that there should have been an automatic out in the ninth spot in the order (the spot that weitzman hit in)…

Of course, since the Bats only listed 8 on the card to start, it was not a valid lineup card (they had 9 at the field)… I could go on and on… my head hurts!

Like I said, I did what I felt was most in line with the rules, and in the spirit of the game. I could very well be wrong (but then again, if I wasn't there what would the call have been?). As always… very open to suggestions. As it happened, it had no bearing on the outcome. And really, it was simply an oversight by the manager of the bats… a possibly costly one, but an oversight nonetheless.

Good all around game today Ducks. Great hitting and defense. Nick Homa was tough.

As far as the lineup error, I handed Mr. Jones the lineup card without even looking at it. It was my mistake, but I didn't believe it had any bearing in the game. You were up 5-1 at the time.

The Gray Bats season is over, and so is the blog. Time to prepare for next summer as Gwin says championships in this league are built in the off-season and with new acquistions.

To be honest, I didn't even notice Kirk Gibson's flip. All I saw from my angle was a ball going about 380 feet, which at first, I thought was going to curve foul, but ended up about hitting that red building over the hill. I threw a curveball up and in to Jesse Smith the next pitch, but wasn't trying to throw at him. Even if I was, he would probably catch my 70 mph fastball with his bare hand, laugh and throw it back to me.

And about Kirk Gibson's home run, "Man, that ball got outta here in a hurry. I mean anything that travels that far oughta have damn stewardess on it, don't you think?"

    28-3.

    Good luck vs. Kenny Powers.

The Gray Bats will be back next year, hopefully more humble and with some more guys who can hit.

Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Gibson. I just try to go out there and have fun because that's what baseball is all about. I am not going to sit here and brag about how good I am because I'm not that good. I'm just a 32 year old pitcher trying to keep his career alive.

I thought we started a good rivalry with the Ducks this year. When I was coaching third base, I could hear Novak, Casale and McCray playing around throwing the ball around the horn almost making fun of how bad our defense was. We really pissed you guys off with our trash talk, and in the end, I think it really gave your team extra motivation to go out there and kick our ass.

I look forward to playing the Ducks again next summer.

Good Luck today Adam Smith. The Black Sox can't hit a curveball, especially Kenny Powers.
